I grew up living by the ocean in the state of Washington. I then went on and during college worked for three summers in Alaska. It was very different than our California beaches, but the ocean non-the-less. We recently moved a few blocks from the beach. It has brought back so many memories and has been extremely healing for my soul. I most often get up early in the morning or just as the sun is getting ready set; I will grab a sweatshirt and take the dogs down to the beach. I spend time walking, praying, and watching the waves. I love how creation can scream of the existence of God.
As I have been doing this over the last several weeks, I have been thinking about how powerful and forceful the waves are, yet they have distinct boundaries and limitations. Amid all their strength, they must be harnessed, controlled, and ordered. If left without restriction, destruction would become inevitable. God has given the clear boundaries that serve to protect, preserve, and maintain life and vitality for the rest creation.
I believe this can serve as a metaphor and reminder of our lives. We are called to live lives of power in the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 says that we will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us to be His witness to the rest of the world. We are to be fruitful and multiply. We are to be productive and determined to live out the Great Commission.
While all this is true, our lives must be harnessed with clear boundaries and equilibrium. Proverbs 20:23 says, “unequal weights are an abomination to the Lord, and false scales are no good.” We are to walk in step with Holy Spirit and to be led and directed by Him. It is then and only then will we yield the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5). Walking in step means we cannot run ahead or fall behind His leading. Often when my life feels out of balance, I have either stopped moving forward, feeling paralyzed, or I have run too hard and too fast where I feel like I got wind knocked out of me. Both scenarios can be detrimental. A life lived with a lack of boundaries and balance, we run the risk of yielding to fleshly desires and being out of step with the Holy Spirit. This will not only cause us harm, but ultimately can lead to the destruction of many others within our wake.
This time of reflection has caused me to pause and assess my own life. Where do need to implement boundaries and what aspects of my life are out of balance? I believe if we do this well and consistently, our lives will be marked with greater power, influence, and eternal fruitfulness as we walk in step with Spirit of God. Maybe take some time today or this week to take a walk along the beach and reflect upon waves. Take some time to pray and allow The Holy Spirit to bring you to place of walking in step with Him. May we live lives marked with power and fruitfulness living into the abundant life that Jesus said we would have.
