A Lake, A Weather App and Perilous Times- Part 2

September 21, 2021

Okay, Pastor David here! Remember my devotional last week about the radar that we were going to beat the storm with and find a way through it? Well, as you can see behind me on the lake, that didn't happen! We just finally found some shelter. I hope these people at this house will be okay with it. But we finally found shelter! We went through a torrential downpour with hail and finally found our way to the dock. You can see the boat back there.

We now have shelter, but it brings to mind… at least my friend, Todd, gave me some help here… a verse: “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand” (Proverbs 19:21). When we think that we have our life all planned out, it's not always the way it works, does it?

“Got my radar… got my boat with a big motor on it… we will be able to beat this thing! We're going to have a great afternoon!”

Well, the Lord is the one who controls the storms including this storm that’s now over the entire lake. Life is that way in many ways, isn’t it? We make plans. We put our plans together. We begin to step into the future.

James reminded us of this as well, when he said, “Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that’” (James 4:15). Our lives are always in the hands of the Lord. So, even in a time like this, when life takes a turn that I didn't expect, we find that we can put our trust in the Lord. We can realize that His ways are good! His purposes are good! And whatever his plans are right now, we'll find out what those are. All we do is continue to walk by faith, step by step into the future, so that we find what God wants for us.

This is going to be a short devotional because I am shivering and I’m freezing half to death. But here's my encouragement to you. As you take steps into the future, hold your plans loosely and realize that God may have plans that are vastly different than what you think. But He can be trusted and His ways are good. The things that he's going to bring in your path are because he wants to use you in ways that you never thought possible. He wants to refine you and to make you into the man or woman of God that he has called you to be.

So, I am going to sign out now. Let’s be that kind of man or woman. God bless you!

1)    Read Proverbs 19:21. Do you feel this is true in your life? Have you had dreams crushed or plans that fell apart?

2)    Read James 4:15. How might life be different if you held your plans up to the Lord and say, “Lord, here is what I think, nevertheless, your will be done. Lead me, I pray.”

3)    Do you have any present plans? Why don’t you hold each one up to the Lord and pray the prayer above?

4)    Ask the Lord to help you want his will more than anything.

5)    How can you encourage this in the life of others as well? Will you share this with one person today to encourage him or her?
