Pass It On

Hey, did you hear – I’m a grandpa now?  Oh, you must have heard already, huh?

Seriously, while I’m overjoyed that I now have a granddaughter, I also understand that I have an awesome responsibility as a grandparent.  I have the responsibility to share with my granddaughter what the Lord has done in my life.  This verse from the Old Testament is now an incredibly important one for my wife and me:

Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children – (Deuteronomy 4:9)

While my wife and I can still seek to have a spiritual influence on our young adult children, we now have this new call on our lives to have a spiritual influence on our granddaughter.  In these early days, months, and years we can speak and sing to her about how much she’s loved by Jesus.  As she gets a little older we can read to her from the Bible.  When she gets older still we can ask her to read to us from the Bible, discuss with her the work of God in our lives, and invite her to share about God’s work in her life as well.

We are grateful that our son and daughter-in-law desire to raise their daughter in a Christ-centered home, so they will be our granddaughter’s primary spiritual influence.  My wife and I bring supplemental discipleship to the picture, but we take that supplemental discipleship very seriously.

Brothers and sisters, if you have grandchildren and/or children, I pray that you sense this same high calling to be an influence for Jesus in their lives.  If you don’t have kids or grandkids, or don’t have access to them for one reason or another, I’m confident that God would love for you to be the spiritual parent or grandparent to a young person somewhere near you, including here at Cornerstone.

God wants to use us in the lives of others, my friends, passing on to them what God has done in our lives.  Let’s answer that call.
